Overview of "Servant Leadership Roadmap"

Servant Leadership, a term we here way to often as almost a catch phrase for too many people.

And as Agile PM keeps getting more and more popular, the term Servant Leadership continues to get thrown around.

But what is it?

Well, thats what Cara explains in her book, but what was refreshing is she explains it outside of the role in project management as she works in the medical field. But that does not mean the book will not work for project managers, because to be a project servant leader, you need to understand what servant leadership means.

This book is a guide for how you can recognize and develop your leadership style. Starting with describing how each leadership style is unique, she guides you in how to develop your skills in 12 specific compentencies:

Each chapter, Cara dives into what each competency is and how you can learn to grow and master it.

Like in chapter 5, when she states:

"Motivation and Persuasion", the chapter starts with: "To persuade your audience, you must first know your audience. Who is your audience? We convey a different message when addressing different classes or professions. Consider the occupation"
-Pg 35, Chapter 5

Which if that doesn’t sound like solid Stakeholder Management advice, I don’t know what does!

A short book at only a little over 100 pages of reading material, this book is packed with information surround servant leadership skills.

Who Should Read?

This book is equipped to help leaders, young and old to understand some of the functions around being a servant leader.

Good, Thumbs Up,

What I Enjoyed About The Book:

I enjoyed the simplicity around this book.

It didn’t try to hit on theory, just some practical advice that anyone who picks up the book can comprehend and use in the life.

As an advocate that leadership can be learned (or trained), this book is a solid way to get a feel for what is expected of a servant leader. Not just a line or slide in your PMP or PMI-ACP course that describes an overview of what servant leadership truly entails.

It’s an easy read too. I knocked it out over a bagel and coffee, marking up the pages and adding tabs for future reference.

I especially liked the chapter on leadership styles. Going through each type of leadership style, you can easily identify where and when you should apply some of these in the life of a PM. But you can also see the leadership styles that dominate in your boss, whether that be good or bad.

Overall, this is an enjoyable book that you can easily read and reference when you need it!

Thumbs Down

What I Didn’t Enjoy About The Book:

I’ve said it before, I like books that have pictures, graphs, or resources to support the material.

This is a great book, and although I understand it is self-published, having either some images in the book for examples of the definitions/lists given throughout the book would have been helpful.

A great tactic would have been to setup a website or URL to a page to download a resource, a one-pager of all the advice she gives. Something to download and hang up in your office or put as your desktop background.

This book has what it needs to serve as a quick read, but it needs to add more for quick reference and reminder of the lessons months after reading it.

Overall Rating:

This book is worth picking up. You are guaranteed to learn something about yourself, your leadership style, and how to improve those specific areas that need adjustment.
