Overview of “Risk Assessment Framework”
Like many other project managers, the author Ray, had a project blow up due risk.
Not wanting to be deterred, Ray put his lessons learned into this book. His focus? On giving readers a dive into his Risk Assessment Framework on how to avoid failure and maximize risk management.
The result, this book that is broken down into three sections:
Section 1: The Risk Assessment Framework
- Definitions & Overview
- Risk Planning
- Risk Identification
- Risk Analysis
- Risk Response Planning
- Risk Monitoring
- Risk Response Implementation
Section 2: Achieving Success with the Risk Assessment Framework
- Introduction to Successful Implementation
- Tailoring the Framework
- A Model Risk Management Plan
- Using a Functional Risk Register
- Conducting a Successful Risk Assessment Workshop
Section 3: Tools & Techniques Supporting the Risk Assessment Framework
- Risk Planning Tools & Techniques
- Risk Identification Tools & Techniques
- Qualitative Risk Analysis Tools & Techniques
- Quantitative Analysis Tools & Techniques
- Risk Response Planning Tools & Techniques
- Risk Monitoring & Response Implementation Tools & Techniques
Each chapter of the book builds upon itself. Walking the reader through Ray’s Risk Assessment Framework.
Within Section 1, he spells out the inputs, processes, outputs, and critical success factors for each step of the risk management lifecycle.
Section 2 dives into the actual framework. He gives checklists, flow charts, and detailed breakdowns on how to implement each area of the framework.
While Section 3, provides all the tools and techniques you can use throughout the lifecycle to complete the framework.

Who Should Read Risk Assessment Framework?
This book is not a study guide for the PMP® and PMI-RMP®. Instead, this is a resource for anyone looking for information on HOW to use the concepts taught during these exam prep courses and use them in your organizations processes.
My recommendation is if you are a project manager struggling to implement risk management in your organization, this book would be a great resource for you. Ray does a great job explaining key concepts around risk management, giving you a framework.
The framework overall is not revolutionary though. If you have worked in the space for some time, a practicing PMI-RMP, or someone with an effective risk management process — you’ll probably not enjoy this book.
But if you are a project manager struggling with implementing risk management in your projects, a PMO struggling to find a framework to implement in your organization, or a leader looking for a simple breakdown on how to use risk management effectively, then this is a framework you can take away and implement starting tomorrow.

What I Enjoyed About The Book:
This book is a great resource and framework for employing risk management in your organizations. Its fundamentally aligned to the PMBOK® and the Risk Management in Portfolio’s, Programs, and Projects: A Practice Guide.
A theme I enjoyed throughout the book is the need to grow and learn from your employment of the framework. To include adding some personalization and scaling to the framework. This allows for changes and improvements, increasing your capacity to use and grow the framework to match your style.
It is recommended though that you first apply the framework as written in the book though. Similar to establishing a solid foundation and then building up from there, this book takes the approach of risk management being a fundamental process that is modular to your own circumstances.
Ray does a great job at breaking down concepts that are applicable to anyone who is using the book.
The checklists provided throughout the book are applicable and easy to use.
The chapters on tools and techniques were my favorite, since they provided actionable ways to apply the concepts taught throughout the book.
I really did enjoy Ray’s tips throughout the book. Many that I did write down for future use. Like on Pg 35, he wrote a paragraph:
“Subject matter experts from outside the team need to participate in critical analysis to identify all significant risks. As the old saying goes, we sometimes cannot see the forest for the trees. Any experts not directly participating in the analysis should review and provide feedback on the completed risk log.

Small things like this make me think of how when we run risk workshops, those who cannot attend, although they are subject matter experts are needed to make proper analysis.
Collecting and distributing minutes for the meetings are always necessary, but having accurate and detailed notes are needed for these specific stakeholders who can provide detailed feedback.
Overall, a great book for those who need help establishing or learning the risk management process through Ray’s Risk Assessment Framework.

What I Didn’t Enjoy About The Book:
As solid as this book is as a foundation framework for risk management, I do not recommend it for experienced project/risk managers or those with working processes. Now, when I say working, they should be working. If not working, this would be a good start.
Which brings me to the fact that I didn’t find out until after reading the book and starting this review that there is an implementation guide (listed below in other work by the author).
As good as this book is, if you are having problems with your risk management, this boo alone might overwhelm you with great ideas and concepts without too much implementation processes. I like that a workbook exists and maybe in the future I will go through it as an extension of this review.
